Learning to ride a bicycle

They say cycling is the most efficient mode of transport. It’s a pity that Chinese moved on to gasoline vehicles and then again to Hybrids now – they should have stayed with bicycles.

Since of late, my eldest (10 year old) have been asking us to get her a bicycle. I suspect it is more because some of her friends having bicycles than her love for the same. In any case we went shopping for one over the weekend. Ended up at a place in Galle Road which sold foldable bikes – wow, now that’s a neat trick. It only came in silver/black combination. Luckily my daughter loved it too (she is growing out of that usual ‘pink’ phase). So we got it. After also buying a helmet, the question was whether we get some training wheels or not. Although my daughter was looking forward to owning a bike, I was quite sure that she will put up a tantrum when she has to learn how to ride it (She did the same when she got on a horse the very first few times). So I am pretty certain that if I had offered her training wheels, she would not really grow out of it. So I decided not to bring it up.

Now that we brought the bike home, I am trying to figure out the best way to train her to ride it. Should I hold it from the back and run behind the bike as some parents do? Or should I ask her to ride/learn on her own. I honestly cannot remember how I learnt.

Any advice?

I think hold it from the back and walk behind her, that is the usual way.

Get her to go from zero up....balancing on the left peddle if she is right handed.... way back in the sixties no trainers were heard of it was only the standard bicycles then.....

Doing the same thing these days with my kid. I'm running behind her holding from her jumper (of course it's bit easier here as I can control her holding her jumper without grabbing her around or holding bike). Don't hold the handle then they don't learn to balance it. The best thing is I'm getting free exercise ;-)

I would opt to let her to be, her own...

I don't remember that I got any training from anyone than observing the riders...

I hope the bike is in standered size, or smaller BMX like? Either case How i did learn was putting the leg through the rods and limping as I try to get hold of the handles and the balance.

then I remember small nudge like a hump along road helped me to get off the ground finally, I think it took me fairly short period to get off the ground like 2-4 days and I was flying... my age too must've been 7-14 somewhere which I don't recall.

I don't think it has anything to do with being a boy or a gir. Naturally girls have more tendancy to be "more balanced" against the gravity as of my biology sir put it when did the ALs. Mentioning that you no need to give a lady a seat in a bus unless she pregnant or sick, making a little fun of it.

As I remember it was really a wonderful feeling fying through the winds, hands off the handles, on steep decends, when I mastered the art lately...

I wish her good luck in her endevours... it's gonna be fun...
